Main Gauche
Time Period: 16th-17th century
Location: Europe
Common Construction: Steel

The main gauche is a dagger designed to be wielded in the left hand in conjunction with another sword or dagger in the primary hand. It has a triangular guard and a strong crossbar which allows the wielder to parry light swords such as the rapier.

Some versions of the main gauche have a lever in the guard which deploys two more blades at 30 degree angles when pressed. This was used to catch and possibly break an opponent's sword rendering him defenseless.
