Sword in the Stone

The sword in the stone was literally a sword stuck in a block of stone that granted its wielder the authority to rule over Britain. Many men tried to pull the sword free but none were successful except for Arthur.

In some versions of Arthurian folklore, the the sword in the stone and Excalibur are the same. In others, the sword in the stone was shattered in a fight with King Pellinore. The Lady of the Lake granted Arthur the use of Excalibur as a replacement.
