The small sword evolved from the rapier and colichemarde, and was the last dueling sword before being replaced by pistols. It is very light and very easy to wield, and helped to refine modern fencing techniques.

The use of swords among the civilian population rapidly declined in the 18th century, after which the small sword became ceremonial rather than functional.
