Heater
Time Period: 13th-15th century
Location: Europe
Common Construction: Wood covered in Leather

Heater shields are the characteristic triangular shields of the medieval period. Like the kite shields that they developed from, the heater is constructed of a wooden core and covered in leather. Use of the heater persisted until plated armor supplanted the need for a shield among knights, at which point the use of two handed weapons began to gain popularity. Personal shields were generally reduced in size during the Renaissance until the point that they were largely abandoned with the advent of pikemen formations and finally gunpowder.
