Armet
Time Period: 15th-16th century
Location: England, Italy
Common Construction: Steel

The armet was developed in the 15th century, in the same period as the sallet and barbute. It is often confused with the close helm and although they look very similar, the construction differs slightly.

The armet fully encloses the head and protects the face via a visor. It also has two cheek plates that open backward from the front of the face. The term "shut up" is derived from the use of this helmet, in which chatty knights were told to close their cheek plates and prepare for combat.

The armet was primarily used in England and Italy, the sallet was popular in Germany and France. It is believed that the armet eventually developed into the close helm, possibly with the influence of other 15th century helmet designs as well.
