Banded Mail

Banded mail consists of horizontal metal strips sewn or riveted onto a leather backing. This sounds suspiciously similar to brigandine or lorica segmentata, and it is not certain that this was an actual historical armor classification. It seems more likely that the term has gained popularity through tabletop and video games.

It may be possible that this is a loose English translation of the Japanese okegawa-do gusoku. The Japanese riveted this armor either vertically or horizontally according to the wearer's preference. Yokohagi okegawa-do would refer to horizontally riveted banded mail, and tatehagi okegawa-do would refer to vertically riveted splint mail.
