Ring Mail

Ring mail is a fantasy armor used in tabletop and video games. It is described in one of two possible ways. First, it could be relatively large metal rings sewn onto a leather backing. This would protect against glancing blows but offer no substantive protection against direct hits. The other explanation is that it is functionally identical to chain mail, but the rings are thin, creating a much greater distance between each ring. This allows arrows and stabbing weapons to penetrate the armor easily. As the rings became thicker, there was less open space and ring mail developed into chain mail. Either way, ring mail as an armor classification did not exist in history.
