Ahlspiess (also known as the Awl Pike)
Time Period: 15-16th century
Location: Germany, Austria, England
Common Construction: Steel

The ahlspiess is a heavy spear of German origin used in the 15th and 16th centuries. It has a long quadrangular steel head attached to a wooden shaft, and the soldier's hands are protected by a metal guard called a rondel.

The ahlspiess was used in England under the term Awl Pike. In addition to a weapon of war, the spear was also used in single combat tournaments. The ahlspiess is particularly front heavy, and one must commit the entire body to a spear thrust making it very difficult to recover from a missed attack.
