Splint Mail

Splint mail consists of vertical metal strips sewn or riveted onto a leather backing. This would be unsuitable for body armor as the vertical strips would hinder movement, but it would be fine for the legs and arms in the form of vambraces, cuisses, greaves, etc.

It is not certain that this was an actual historical armor classification, it seems more likely that the term has gained popularity through tabletop and video games. However, it may be possible that this is a loose English translation of the Japanese okegawa-do gusoku. The Japanese riveted this armor either vertically or horizontally according to the wearer's preference. tatehagi okegawa-do would refer to vertically riveted splint mail, and yokohagi okegawa-do would refer to horizontally riveted banded mail.
