Carolingian Spear
Time Period: 8th-11th century
Location: France
Common Construction: Wooden shaft, Iron tip

The Carolingian spear was the primary weapon of the Franks, who lived in what is present day France. Wealthy soldiers were instructed to own not only a lance, but a sword and bow as well. However, the average foot soldier during this period could not afford a sword, and spears were both abundant and cheap.

The distinctive feature of the Carolingian spear is the lugs or "wings" on either side of the spear head which prevent the spear from penetrating too deeply and getting stuck in the target.
