Foil
Time Period: 17th century to present
Location: Worldwide
Common Construction: Steel

The foil is a fencing implement with an extremely slender, flexible blade designed only for thrusting. The foil was developed at the same time as the colichemarde. However the foil was created for practice fencing, while the colichemarde was created for dueling. As such, the foil remains in use today while the colichemarde does not.

Technically the modern foil is not a sword any more than a paintball marker is a gun. It was originally developed to approximate the use of a weapon, such as the rapier or colichemarde, and modern day foils are considered sporting equipment.
